EXAMINATION NOTICE

ENTRY LEVEL FIREFIGHTER

NORRISTOWN FIRE DEPARTMENT

            Applications for the position of  ENTRY-LEVEL FIREFIGHTER for the Municipality of Norristown, a Civil Service position, will be available beginning Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Office of the Municipal Administrator, Norristown Municipal Hall, 235 E. Airy Street, Norristown, PA 19401.  Applications may be picked up on that date between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and thereafter during regular business hours between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

 

            COMPLETED APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE MUNICIPAL ADMINISTRATOR’S OFFICE at the above address PRIOR TO 3:00 P.M. on May 16, 2017.  Completed Applications must be accompanied by payment in the amount of $35 to cover the administrative cost of testing.  Payment is by check only,  payable to “Municipality of Norristown,” and is non-refundable. 

 

            Every applicant for any position in the Fire Department must: (1)possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a graduate equivalency diploma; (2)  be a United States citizen, 21 years of age by May 16, 2017; (3) be physically and mentally fit to perform the full duties of a firefighter (4) prior to appointment, possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; (5) have served as a firefighter in a combination fire department, and  include with the completed Application a letter from the fire chief, on official department stationery, confirming same; (6) be a Pennsylvania State Certified Level II Firefighter or equivalent and have an issued certification number in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 consensus standards (PROOF MUST BE PROVIDED);  (7) must possess current certificates (either the full course within the last 12 months, or a refresher course within the last 12 months for Hazardous Materials Operation) from an approved training facility for Hazardous Materials Operations in accordance with the NFPA 472 consensus standards (PROOF MUST BE PROVIDED), Emergency Vehicle Operations Course – Fire Apparatus or equivalent (PROOF MUST BE PROVIDED, and Pump Operations Course (PROOF MUST BE PROVIDED).

 

            The written examination will take place as follows:

The Reading List of study materials for the exam consists of the following:

 

IFSTA, “Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations,” 6th Ed.

“Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations,” Jones & Bartlett, 2nd Ed.

IFSTA, “Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook,” 3rd  Ed.

DOT, “Emergency Response Guidebook,” 2012 or 2016 Ed. 

 

Other mandatory components of the complete testing process are an oral examination, physical agility testing, background check, and medical and psychological examinations.

HOURLY WAGE:    $28.7102 BASE PER HOUR

HOURS:                  8:30 A.M. TO 4:30 P.M., MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY

EMPLOYMENT:      NON-EXEMPT/FULL-TIME

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The Senior Grants Coordinator shall have a Bachelor's Degree and/or seven years progressively responsible Planning and Community Development grant experience; any equivalent combination of education and experience.  A writing sample is required.  Must have proficient computer skills; financial/record keeping skills.  Successful backgroud checks required.

GENERAL DEFINITION:  A mid-level position to assist the Director of Planning with a wide range of community development activities, including, but not limited to housing rehabilitation, economic development, historic preservation and infrastructure restoration.  Must have grant research/management experience in community development; provide assistance in the administrative duties related to implementing the CDBG program, PA Dept. of Community & Economic Development projects; working familiarity of the HUD IDIS accounting system.  Must be able to work effectively with community groups, specific interest groups, as well as Municipal Council and Administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years of age; have a Penn. Child Abuse Clearance, PA State Police and FBI clearance and previous experience working with children.  Must have knowledge of children's games, arts, and crafts and sports.  First Aid and CPR certified preferred.

GENERAL DEFINITION: This position requires strong and diverse knowledge of summer camp activities.  Supervision; tracking of inventory and attendance; excellent communication skills and the ability to work with large or small groups of children.
