Cruising in Montgomery and Berks Counties
Remember cruising? No? Those of a certain age will remember--It was the favorite activity on Friday and Saturday nights during the 1950's to show off your ride and your girl, impress your friends, or maybe get the attention of that special girl. Then stop at the drive-in for a soft drink or snack and check out everyone else! Too young to remember? Join the Historical Society of Montgomery County to learn what you missed!
Pottstown first came to be known as the cruising capital of the East Coast in the 1950s and held on to the title for many years. In the 1960s, hundreds would line the sidewalks to watch the hot rods and classic cars cruise down High Street. Among the circuit favorites were the Tropical Treat, Hilltop Drive-In, and Dempsey Diner. In Lansdale automobile enthusiasts "cruised the Dale".
Presenter Tina M. Kissinger has been a local resident of the Reading and Pottstown areas most of her life, and she has been an active participant in local cruising events since the 1980s. She is the author of Cruising in Montgomery and Berks Counties.
The presentation begins with a social and light refreshment at 5:30 p.m.; the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. The Historical Society is handicapped accessible with limited off-street parking.
