Council President Statement on Norristown State Hospital

NORRISTOWN, PA – The 200+ acres of State Hospital property located within Norristown is prime development property and its highest and best use would bring much needed tax relief to this community.  This has been a Municipal priority for decades and we are greatly encouraged by the recent movement of Governor Wolf’s administration toward that goal.

While not ideal for our community, the Norristown Municipal Council understands the situation the Commonwealth finds itself in related to providing mental health facilities to meet the settlement agreement with the ACLU.    It is easily evident that Norristown does more than its fair share in the housing of social services and government agencies in our town.  In principle the Council supports the Commonwealth’s proposal to vacate and convey the property for redevelopment no later than 2022, provided that there is a firm, tangible agreement to do so.  We also strongly support the inclusion of organized labor in their immediate construction efforts and thoughtful, well-planned development and remediation of the remaining State Hospital grounds that is beneficial to all surrounding communities.

All inquiries should be made to Crandall O. Jones, Municipal Administrator, at 610-270-0421.
