Black Ballerina: Documentary Screening and Q&A

In celebration of Women's History Month, join us for a screening of an engaging documentary film, followed by a question and answer session with Producer and Director Frances McElroy. Door prizes, too!

Black Ballerina tells the story of black women from different generations who fell in love with ballet, and stimulates a fresh discussion about race, inclusion and opportunity across all sectors of American society.

Producer/Director Frances McElroy is a 2009 Pew Fellow in the Arts and 2010 Leeway Foundation Transformation Awardee. Project supporters include the National Endowment for the Arts, Women In Film and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. BLACK BALLERINA is produced by Shirley Road Productions and distributed by American Public Television.

The Art & History of Letter Writing Workshop

Before there were texts and e-mails, telephones and video chats, there was the simple letter. Simple, but often quite beautiful not only in their language, but in their stylistic handwriting. There is a history and art behind the writing of a letter, and this 2-hour workshop explores some of its history and gives attendees a chance to pen their own letter!

The workshop will examine some of the letters from the collections of the Historical Society of Montgomery County and other examples of early handwritten texts. We’ll also give attendees a chance to try their own hand at creating the penmanship styles and language that would have been used in America throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
