[ARCHIVED] 2020 Citizen’s Police Academy

CPA AT MONTCOPA

2020 Citizen’s Police Academy

The Norristown Police Department is pleased to announce the 2020 Citizen’s Police Academy! The Academy is an 11 week program which meets each Wednesday evening from 6 PM to about 9 PM, beginning Wednesday March 18, and culminating with a graduation and presentations of certificates during the June Council Meeting, slated for June 2nd, at 7 PM.

The Citizen’s Police Academy is free of charge and is open to residents of Norristown that are interested in learning more about the duties and responsibilities of members in each division of the Police Department.  Each class presentation covers several topics, which are presented by the members of the department that are subject matter experts in the areas that are being presented.  Presenters include members of our Command Staff, SWAT team, detectives/investigations, K9 demonstration, Patrol division, Police Chaplain, and civilian professional staff.

The Citizen’s Police Academy is designed to familiarize residents with all of the aspects of the Norristown Police Department, as well as help each student become a leader in their own community through a presentation of Neighborhood Watch.  Students will be presented a series of talking points, which may include handouts for easy reference, hand-on application and demonstrations, as well as a field trip to Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center (911 Center) in Eagleville.  Reliable transportation is the responsibility of each student that attends the Academy, who are chosen through a written application process.

Since the inception in 2016, we have graduated 67 members of the community, with an average of 15 students per year. Class size is limited, so the application process is strictly followed. Students will be required to attend all of the sessions in order to graduate from the program, and a short survey will be handed out to each participant at the end of the program to see where we excelled, as well as where we could use some improvement.

A copy of the registration form is available on the Norristown website, which can be filled out and returned to Lt. Michael Bishop via email to NorristownCPA@norristown.org, or mbishop@norristown.org.  A completed copy can also be faxed to 610-270-0454, or mailed to Lt. Michael Bishop, 235 East Airy Street, Norristown, PA 19401.  The registration is now open and completed applications must be in no later than February 29th, 2020.
