NORRISTOWN, PA – The Municipality of Norristown joins a number of neighboring communities in Montgomery County to issue a disaster declaration as the number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases climbed over the weekend.
Norristown officials made the declaration Monday afternoon after the number of presumptive positive cases of the coronavirus disease in the county reached 24, about one-third of the state’s total cases.
Although none of the county’s cases originated in Norristown, the declaration is a proactive step being taken by the municipality that will last through April 16.
“We’re using it as a proactive approach and procuring additional equipment to make sure we have all means readily accessible to us. With the support of the Municipal Council, we’re taking the necessary steps to make sure our residents are protected,” stated Municipal Administrator Crandall Jones.
“The declaration makes it easier to get more resources and tools and opens the door to state and federal disaster relief, should it become available,” added Norristown Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Tom O’Donnell.
The disaster declararion allows the municipality to be reimbursed by the state and federal government for expenses incurred to ensure the safety and well-being of the community during emergency situations. President Donald Trump issued a national emergency on March 13.
