[ARCHIVED] Norristown creates spring photo contest to encourage creativity during COVID-19

flyer for the photo contest Spring 2020

A month after social distancing became the new normal during the public health crisis known as COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders restricted unnecessary travel, people have gotten creative to educating children and attempting to keep “business” as usual from home.

The Norristown Recreation Department and Public Information Office are teaming up to tap into that creativity and use the municipality as a natural landscape to showcase it by creating a Spring photo contest.

From students to professionals, high end cameras to iPhones, residents are encouraged to take their best shots of the town in three categories and the winning entries will be featured as the banner photo on our social media pages with a tagline for one week each in May.

The categories include Flower Power: this category should highlight the blossoming Spring atmosphere with photos of plants, trees or gardens;

Street scenes: show us everyday street scenes including, but not limited to, biking on the Schuylkill River Trail, foot traffic on Main Street, or any other location that highlights our community and;

Architecture: there is a richness of history in Norristown that’s always on display with its beautiful buildings. Take a picture of your favorite building(s) in the municipality.

“This is an easy way to get outside, keep moving, and capture our beautiful town and community around us!” said Norristown Recreation Manager Erica Genuardi.

“On the Norristown social media pages, people really respond to seeing pictures of our town. Why not flip the switch and let them show us what they’re seeing and highlight their creative approach to capture that?” added Public Information Officer Kevin Tustin.

Please keep in mind that municipal parks are still closed as a COVID-19 precaution and photos are not encouraged to be taken at those locations. Please practice social distancing when going out to take pictures.

Residents are asked to submit their photos by email to recreation@norristown.org with their name, address, a photograph title, and category submission. The contest deadline is April 30. One winner will be selected in each category and their photo featured for one week each in May. For more information contact the recreation department at recreation@norristown.org.
