NORRISTOWN- The statement made by Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale on June 1 regarding recent protests and riots in Philadelphia was not issued on behalf of the Municipality of Norristown. Mr. Gale is an elected member of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and the views in his statement are in no way a reflection of, or related to, the Municipality of Norristown.
The Municipal Council of Norristown issued their own statement Sunday evening about peaceful protests that occurred in the municipality over the weekend. Council supports the First Amendment rights of residents to have peaceful assembly. A copy of council’s statement follows:
A message from Norristown Municipal Council, May 31- The Norristown Municipal Council shares the world’s outrage about the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and all other senseless and dehumanizing assaults on people of color and other disenfranchised minorities. The Council and the Norristown community at large have always celebrated the diversity of our community and see it as one of our greatest strengths. We take pride in the fact that our community recognizes that the Norristown Police Department is a community police department and continuously works to support our residents and keep them safe.
We support people’s First Amendment right to peaceful assembly and ask that everyone honor the spirit of our community with civility and respect. We also ask that, in the interest of public health and welfare, that everyone practices social distancing and wear a mask.
